I bet you are thihnking that I am going to ask you for money for Better BedRest. I will not. I have a story to tell, a tender one at that. Friends of mine, Terry & Stephanie McClung who work and have lived in Howard County gave a fundraiser on Saturday night for SIDS Awareness. This was in honor for their daughter Kaitlyn who died at 5 months old from SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome). This is the second time the McClungs have held an event like this to raise money for SIDS Educational Services
and the University of Maryland Center for Infant and Child Loss
The event this year was an ourpouring of wonderful support drawing near 200 people. This is a family that has now found "their" passion for a cause to support in their daughter's memory. My work with Better BedRest is one of my passions coming from my own traumatic experience 21 years ago. For the McClungs and I, it is our way to turn a negative into a positive. I feel it is so important for people to find their passions in their lives. How wonderful to use this passion and give back to your community in some way. It could be money or your time. The holidays are a great time to think about what truly are your passions and what causes you believe in. Causes that are important for you as a person in the Howard County community and beyond. I wish you all a blessed holiday hoping that you will think about this challenge I have presented you. The most spiritual moment came on Saturday evening as the McClungs let go three ballons to celebrate what would have been Kaitly's 3rd birthday. As we walked outside on the balcony and looked, the sky was filled with stars twinkling as if Kaitlyn was smiling down. The McClungs are giving back....what will you do? Peace and Happiness to all. River Hill senior debuts powerful video for local non-profit!

Talk about talented? Well there's this kid whom Robin Abello suggested we meet. He is a senior at River Hill HS who aspires to be successful in the media production field. Well after the debut of this powerful video, I think he will be very successful! There are many people who have no idea what it like to be in bed as a pregnant mom for months at a time, be in another country and have problems and just feel so isolated. After one views this video not only will they understand pregnancy bedrest, they will see something I have always thought was the "invisable crisis" and now it will be visiable. Now that is what I call talent. See for yourself!

Random Act of Kindness Day....

I had the most humbling experience being on the Oprah's Favorite Things show one year ago today. The audience group on Facebook decided to celebrate our first anniversary by giving back. So today 220 people across the US did Random Acts of Kindness. I know we would like to think we do this everyday, but the experience of surprising a stranger, friend, co worker or loved one is the best. Sometimes nice things happen when one least expects it. It does not even have to cost money. As many of you in the blogging community know, words are powerful. So I challenge you all to join in. We have extended this until December 31st. We even had one person doing it in Korea! If on Facebook, do a search for Random Act of Kindness Day and you will find it. Share your story. Today I was in Target and surprised a mom and bought her diapers. Then tonight I surprised someone at Cosco and filled up their tank of gas. Hello all. I was so pleased today when I came here to our Causes page on Facebook to see that we have grown to 70 members from all around the US! If you are not on, please visit and join our cause to support women on bedrest w high risk pregnancies.

The reason I am writing today is to ask everyone to be creative and think of possible companies that might have an interest in making a tax deductible donation to Better Bedrest, Inc.

We can make contact with these companies, we just need your ideas and thoughts. If you know someone at a company and feel comfortable enough to ask, we welcome that as well.

We are trying to raise more money for our Emergency Grant Fund. This year in particular with the economy and what I call the "winter storm" babies that are all going to be due in the fall, we have given out $10,000+ in grants. Women are losing their homes, jobs and being evicted. I have never in such a short period of time experienced hearing the stories I have heard, along with the phone volunteers of BBR. We welcome all discussions here and ideas!

Meeting with Senator Mikulski's office to lobby for paid FMLA Leave and futher research!

Hello all.

I am honored to say that Better Bedrest along with Mamas On Bedrest are meeting with Senator Mikulski's office on Monday July 12th, 2010 to lobby for paid FMLA leave for women on bedrest with high-risk pregnancies. We are also lobbying for further research on High Risk Pregnancies as the research now is inconclusive and dated.

Many women around the US are struggling financially when the surprise of pregnancy bedrest occurs. I have always called this the "Invisable Crisis" and we need more then ever to try to get this legislation written.

Darline Turner-Lee from www.mamasonbedrest.com has come up from Texas to team up in the effort. California has been successful with getting paid FMLA leave. Maryland could be a forerunner in hopes that more states with follow. We recognize that there are other populations that would also greatly benefit from this as well. Parents of critically ill children, Families with health issues etc.. I spoke recently to a woman who after having twins who were critically ill, had to quit her job and bills were over a million when done.

The US is behind when it comes to this leave and we need to get with the times! Please stay posted as I will continue to write about this issue.

On another note. Save Novemeber 13th, 2010 for the Better BedRest Holiday Gala! We will have a one week vacation raffle to Park City, Utah with available tickets in the fall. This will be a national raffle. We also will have another raffle, thinking about an IPAD for the gala attendees. Raffle tickets with be $20.

Guilt and other negative emotions!

Recently read a little on a parenting site, parenting.com , that I follow regarding guilt and parenting. It is so important to stay healthy and demonstrate healthy behaviors to our children. It is especially important to manage our negative emotions or stressors when on bedrest so I thought I would share this short note with Bumps on a Blog!

Yes parenting is the toughest job on the planet! I say it all the time to parents. And yes there are so many negative emotions that can overwhelm parents (as we all know too well) and this is normal...however, the important things to remember are that we must develop healthy skills in order to return as quickly as possible to a healthy frame of mind in order to be the best parent we can be. Yes these negative emotions, such as guilt are helpful in order to recognize a need to make a change. We must identify the cause for the guilt (or other negative emotion) and learn. Also every interaction does teach our children something. So it is important to demonstrate good coping skills, communication skills, and conflict resolution skills. As each of the comments indicated there was some time of issue/conflict..oops ( all part of life and especially parenting)..what to do next and how to teach our children in each challenging moment is what is most important! Great job to all of you.

Oh my goodness!!! wow! Thank you so much! I don't even know where to begin! This really means so much to me and my family! It really is a blessing, that there are women [and i'm sure men] who really understand the hardships one can face, upon being placed on bed rest. It is so comforting to know that there are people out there that recognize this can be a major issue for some women/families. It is an even better feeling to know that somewhere out there, there is a large group of people that donate their time and energy into helping women [like me] when they are put on bed rest, that there are people that care enough about this issue to start an outreach group, especially when many people do not recognize this as an issue at all.

Not only do you help women like us financially, but emotional and moral support as well. It's a great feeling knowing that everyone at Better BedRest inc. can relate to each of the women placed on bed rest in one way or another and care to take the time out of there day for months to call and talk with women like me that are on bed rest to just chat and see how things are going, and what's on your mind, and also help to provide with any other resources they can give.

Better BedRest inc. is a true blessing for many many reasons, and i will definitely be one to donate to this program once i get back to work, and be a voice for this program for all the other pregnant women out there that are placed on bed rest. Here is how you can help!
We are looking for people in the community to support this event by maling donations for our silent auction. We are looking for tickets to events, items that would be good holiday gifts, vaction getaways for a week or weekend, airline tickets etc...Any donation is a tax deductable donation and Better Bedrest will give you the documentation for the donation. BBr will reinburse shipping from out of state donations.

Lets join together for this powerful cause. Our mission is to support these women and their families as they go thru this invisable crisis that we must make visable.

Become a Better BedRest volunteer!

Hello all. I just wanted to tell you about the great volunteers we have for Better BedRest. After reading this if you are interested in being a volunteer, our application is on out site.

We are currently looking for BBR phone volunteers. One must have a connection to pregnancy bedrest. Phone volunteers are on the phones every few months for a one month shift. If they are a phone captain, they check the phones daily. If they are on the phones they call women on bedrest weekly to check in.

Our volunteers have great passion for our mission for supporting moms on bedrest due to high risk pregnancies. Volunteers are trained by Grassroots Crisis Center staff and myself. Our volunteers have great hearts and do a great job!

We have lots of other volunteers who are not on the phones but help out in other ways. So give us a call or email if you have any questions and join our great group! We do accept out of state volunteers as well.

Ok bedrest moms, past bedrest moms, BBR volunteers, docs, nurses, general public.....time to take part in Bumps on a Blog. Lets see if we can get some ideas going, thoughts, resources and anything on your mind that might help a bedrest mom and their family. Tell us your story. For anyone in the hospital, we recommend asking for a 2nd set of sheets. Makes that hospital bed a bit more comfy...I will let Michelle add some of her ideas on here too.

Bumps in life are just that, we sort of go up the bump and back down again and then life moves on. Bedrest is sort of like that. It is a temporary bump in life that will pass in time and the best part with a hopeful healthy outcome of a baby.

For all those people out there that see healthy pregnant moms walking around each day, we must help make this "invisable" crisis, visable and we will continue our passion with our mission to support this cause. Onward!

Wow, Welcome to Better BedRest's new blog! We hope to get comments here from women on bedrest, their families, anyone that shares our passion to support moms on bedrest due to high risk pregnancies.

I am the founder of BBR. We are in our 16th year. You will see comments here from our volunteers too and people across the United States and who knows, maybe other countries. Wouldn't that be cool!

I was on bedrest for 2 1/2 months in 1990 on my left side at home and in the hospital. I had Severe Pre-Eclampsia and HELLP Syndrome. I delivered a 2lb 10 oz son and was in critical condition for 3 days after. Two years after this experience I committed to doing something about this invisable crisis, as no woman and their family should have to go through this alone.

We are here to help. Our helpline is staffed by wonderful volunteers who have been on bedrest or have a connection to bedrest. We have other volunteers to that are not on the phones, but do many things to help. BBR has one part-time Executive Asst who is great! We listen, we have resources, we listen some more. We can buddy a bedrest mom with another bedrest mom to talk. I hope you all will share your stories, and let us also know how we have helped you if you used our service.
